The Movie Recommendation Thread

I think it would be good if this thread was pinned.

A decent thread and one that could be useful when you decide what to watch.

Can anyone recommend me something to watch?... I'm bored tonight.

No comedy, unless it's darker than the coffee I drink.

Probably no (cult) classics as I've seen most of them.

Nothing from IMDB's top 250 (and similar charts), as I've seen most of it too.

Preferably something that's sort of emotionally moving.

Thank you in advance :P

I watched Buried a few weeks back and it far surpassed my expectations. Recommended if you like low-budget stuff or 'single day' films.

Cheers, I'll check it out! Haven't seen much of Aussie films, to be honest.

I actually considered watching this before I asked for recommendations, haha. I also trust your taste in films, so I think I'll give this a go tonight. Thanks!

P.S. I just watched the last episode of 11.22.63 two days ago, it was immense :O

Dogtooth.

I've just read the description. WTF? :D Cheers, will add it into my list, sounds disturbing enough haha.

Interesting premise, I guess the whole movie takes place in a coffin? Will check it out, thanks!

Oh I've seen it :) Thanks for recommendation though, it's a good film!

Yep, that's the only thing I knew going into it so I'll leave you to it. Enjoy! :)

The movie that's high on my recco list currently is La Isla Minima. One of the best serial killers movies out there.

Dogtooth was brilliant, as well. Buried is nice too. Showed that Ryan Reynolds could act.

Don't know about you, but I'm often looking for some movie recommendations. Thought a thread for that would be a good idea for the future.

I'm having a mild cold, so I'm staying at home for today and tomorrow, and could do with some movie recommendations, as I can't choose anything for some reason.

Some help for you - my top ten films ever:

2001: A Space Odyssey

Thin Red Line

Big Fish

Voces Inocentes

Taxi Driver

The Rocky Horror Picture Show

V for Vendetta

The Fifth Element

Monty Python's The Meaning of Life

Children of Men

Genres I'm looking for: sci-fi, political thriller/drama, war, black/absurd comedy, crime. In general, movies that could be described as 'thought-provoking', or the ones dealing with social issues.

Any help would be much appreciated.

If you have not seen it I would recomend "Alle anderen", thought the script was good and Birgit Minchmayer was superb. Looking forward to Toni Erdmann by the same director. "Kreuzweg" is also great. Also "Gegen die Wand", but I guess you probably have seen that.

If you like Bergman it seems that fewer people have seen "Through a Glass Darkly" than some of his other work, but I think it ranks among his best.

"Ratcatcher" is another beautifull film. Social issues dealt with in an artistic way.

I re-watch the ending every time I'm drunk and feel emotional. Sadie  <3 :(

By far my favourite of the ~6 Bergman films I've seen.

Cheers! Haven't seen any of them with the exception of Gegen die Wand which was a refreshingly good movie. Kreuzweg looks interesting and sort of unique when it comes to the storyline.

" Trees lounge" might be a movie you like.

A movie about a nice loser on a path of self destruction? Indeed, sounds exactly like something I would like, haha. Not sure how I missed this movie, I like Buscemi a lot... Thanks!

Oh yeah, I was thinking about it yesterday, as I remembered you telling me about it, but I couldn't be bothered to go through the message history to find the name of the film though, hehe. Cheers, will give it a go.

You people are the best!
