Juventus chief operating officer Antonio Giraudo has revealed that his club rejected the chance to sign Roma’s Antonio Cassano this summer.

The Italian starlet was expected to join the Bianconeri as his current contract expires in June 2006.

But the player remained in the capital, even if Giraudo has told the Corriere dello Sport newspaper that they could have netted him.

"We approached Roma about Amantino Mancini, however they told us he was untransferable," Giraudo stated.

"Roma offered us Cassano instead, but we already had five attackers and just couldn’t allow his arrival."

One man who the club did successfully poach from Roma was boss Fabio Capello in the summer of 2004.

The tactician instantly delivered the title even if Giraudo has conceded that their swoop for the tactician was not planned.

"We were thinking about Didier Deschamps and a few young Italian Coaches (Cesare Prandelli)," explained the official.

"We were then told that Fabio wanted to leave Roma and that he would be pleased to join us here.

"I immediately informed Umberto Agnelli and he told me to not waste any time in signing him. It has proved to be a good decision."
