Koller Remains Upbeat

Czech Republic striker Jan Koller is confident he will be fit for next year's World Cup.

Koller damaged his cruciate ligament on Saturday during Borussia Dortmund's Bundesliga clash with Mainz.

The towering hit-man was hurt in a challenge from Mainz defender Manuel Friedrich and faces at least six months on the sidelines.

An absence of eight months could be required before Koller is fit again but he is optimistic about the prospects of figuring in the World Cup in Germany next summer.

"Unfortunately, the detailed investigation showed that I have an 80 percent broken cruciate ligament," Koller told Pravo.

"I will have to undergo surgery and a plaster of the whole ligament. It is one of the worst injuries a footballer can have.

"I will be in the clinic for about a week and then I will start physiotherapy.

"He told me that, if it goes well, I could return after half a year. In the worst case, it could take up to eight months but I should be ready for the World Cup in Germany.

"Of course, it will depend on the medication but I am optimistic."

Koller is out of contract at Dortmund at the end of the season and, despite previously stating he will quit the club, the German outfit insist their offer of an extension is still on the table.

Thats really good news for the Czech Republic. Koller adds such strength to their starting 11 with his huge presence, literally! His awesome in the air and can partner a smaller striker (Baros) so well, just knocks it down for them, etc.

Hopefully will see him in the World Cup.

Koller is vital for the Czech Republic now. His thier best player after Nedved retired and with the good midfield they have it is only a matter of time thier in the best 3 international sides of the world.

World Cup Hope For Koller

Jan Koller has declared he is 50-50 to be fit in time for next year's World Cup.

The 32-year-old suffered a cruciate knee ligament injury in September and is likely to be out for the rest of the season, but he has not given up hope of representing Czech Republic in Germany.

"The doctor originally didn't give me much chance but now he insists it could be possible. I see it 50-50. I must fully concentrate on my recovery to have a chance," Koller said.

Koller, though, is not raising his hopes that he will recover in time for the World Cup.

"I would be very glad to play in Germany but I have prepared myself for the possibility of missing it due to injury."

The Borussia Dortmund striker is also not prepared to risk his career to play in the World Cup if he is not fully fit.

"Maybe it would be a big risk, so I would possibly rather miss the World Cup. I would not play there (if it was a risk), for me it would be more important to play football one or more years," Koller added.
