Plenty of entertaining games this weekend in Ligue 1, either through the overall goal count in some matches or the tightly-fought tactical battles on the field.

Montpellier were unable to add another win onto their highly impressive run of league form as they lost in a very close game to struggling St Etienne. St Etienne will be looking to build on the result in order to drag themselves further out of the relegation battle they could find themselves in as the weeks advance. Another side who were unable to build on their decent form was Monaco. A few weeks ago Monaco were flying fairly high in the league, but some dodgy results, including this 3-0 defeat away to Lens, has seen them drop down some positions in the table. Paris Saint-Germain have been struggling in recent weeks, but managed to defeat a lacklustre Toulouse side 1-0 to lift some pressure off of manager Antoine Kombouaré as there have been several questions this week over his role as PSG manager and whether he should be the option for both the short-term and long-term future of the club.

The two Ligue 1 giants Lyon and Marseille managed to win impressively. Marseille saw off nancy 3-1 with Mamadou Niang grabbing a hat-trick. There was also a hat-trick in the other game as Lyon defeated Sochaux 4-0 with a Michel Bastos hat-trick and Lisandro Lopez netting the fourth. Lille went into their match with Rennes knowing they'd have to win to move back to third following Lyon's earlier victory and they did so, however it did take a late-goal in order to win 2-1. Bordeaux's match away to Auxerre was called off but they could feel the pressure as the bigger teams begin to show some form and the chasing pack (Montpellier & Lille) have closed the gap in recent weeks.
