Bolton defender Gary Cahill could miss the rest of the season because of a blood clot in his arm.

The 24-year-old, who had been tipped to make England's World Cup squad, was taken ill on Friday and sat out Saturday's 0-0 draw against Fulham.

Bolton manager Owen Coyle revealed: "Gary suffered a pain in his arm and it became severely swollen.

"It turns out he had a blood clot in his arm, so he is going to be out for a number of months."

Cahill is due to be released from hospital on Monday after being kept in since Saturday.

"It is a severe blow for the boy but our main concern is his welfare. We have to make sure Gary is fit and well," said Coyle.

"He will miss the next few months, it might be for the rest of the season, we will hear from the specialist later.

"I don't think it is a sport-related injury, I think it is just one of those things that can happen to anyone at any given time, " said the Bolton boss.

The former England Under-21 player has been in excellent form for Wanderers this season, earning a call into the full England squad and had been linked with a move away from the Reebok Stadium during the January transfer window.

Coyle had led calls for England boss Fabio Capello to take the former Aston Villa player to this summer's World Cup in South Africa.

However, his chances of making the squad have now been severely dented - even if he does manage a return for his club before the end of the Premier League season.

The former Burnley boss, though, promised that Cahill will receive first-class treatment in his recovery bid: "Gary will get the best care available to him. As much as we love football, we will focus on making sure Gary recovers well."

Cahill was part of England's squad for the World Cup qualifying victory over Kazakhstan in June, 2009 but is yet to win a senior cap.

Awful news considering he may have made the squad in the summer.

...And that's the end of that chapter.

Coyle or no Coyle, we're now big favourites for the drop if you ask me.

A vital member of our team, the only one who puts my mind at ease when we're under siege in our own half.

Hopefully the team will rally round this and put in that extra bit of effort, because if they don't, we're going to be hosting Barnsley next season.

Don't think Bolton will go down because hes out, but he is a vital part of their team at both ends of the pitch. I was shocked when they said he was their top scorer this season which proves just what a big player he is for them as his position is centre back! Don't think it will impact that much on England though as Sky Sports are saying as he wouldn't start and there are 4 at least ahead of him in the pecking order. He'll have other chances to go to major championships though if he continues his good form for Bolton. He could definately play for a better team, it might even be a bonus in a strange way for Bolton as I would have thought a lot of bigger clubs may have been preparing a bid for him in the summer hes been that good.

He was a pivotal defender in our team while he was at Bramall Lane, such a good player. It's a shame, because in all honesty, I'd rather have him in the team than Ferdinand. But that's just personal preference because of my dislike for Rio.

Good excuse for relegation, losing ONE defender when they're one point off relegation with 13 games to go (14 for them) Pretty much covering himself if they do go down, wouldn't that be a shame if they went down and Burnley stayed up

Ok. Imagine Liverpool losing Gerrard from here on in. Only "ONE" player, but he's pretty pivotal, is he not?

It's that crucial, we're leaky as fuck at the back anyway, and to lose our one leading light is a massive kick in the bollocks.

Sadly, Burnley won't stay up, so this time you'll struggle to be the smug tool you usually are.

Like we're without Torres, you get over it. If you'd lost a pivotal striker then you might have a case, but you can organise a defence while getting a striker who scores is much harder.

I wouldn't lose any sleep if you both went down, whining tosser. Wah wah wah a player got injured and we're going down wah wah wah. You go down you deserve to, read into that what you will as I couldn't give a sh1t what a two bit prick like yourself thinks of me

Well, you're wrong. Being a glory boy, you wouldn't realise that defences are crucial in relegation battles. You can stay up by getting a tough 0-0 through having one good defender, but even you must understand that scoring four goals with a fit striker only to concede five times(!) with centre backs like Andy O'Brien is going to relegate you.

If you don't care about Bolton, and want us down, don't post. But yet, you care enough to reply. Surely you can rise above a "two bit prick" like me without getting pissy?
