Nilmar - Lyon

FACT FILE
Club Lyon (Fra)
Country Brazil
Born July 14, 1984, in Bandeirantes
Previous clubs Bandeirantes, Internacional
International debut August 2004, v Haiti
International caps 1 (1 goal)
Honours World Youth Cup 2003

Brazilian attacking starlet Nilmar was always likely to settle in quickly at Lyon following his £4.1million summer move from Internacional of Porto Alegre.

He may speak little French, the weather in Lyon is far cooler than in his homeland and no Lyonnais restaurants serve the traditional Brazilian pork and beans dish of feijoada. But the presence of four compatriots in the dressing-room has undoubtedly helped to ease any culture shock.

“The other Brazilians in the team are my four dads,” says Nilmar, 20, who marked his senior debut for Brazil with a last-minute goal in a 6-0 friendly win in Haiti last August.

“Our team captain, Cacapa, has watched over me, Juninho gives the most advice on
the pitch, while I live in the same apartment block as Cris and we socialise a lot. Giovane Elber has taken me under his wing as well. Like me, he came to Europe very young and knows it isn't easy.”

It's ironic that Elber is something of a father figure since Nilmar would never have set foot in Lyon if the former Bayern Munich star had not broken his right leg and suffered ankle ligament damage against Metz in August. With Elber set to be sidelined for at least four months, Lyon badly needed another front-runner, and director of recruitment Bernard Lacombe immediately thought of Nilmar.

“I'd seen him play at the World Youth Cup and also in a couple

of Brazilian League games,” said Lacombe. “He has enormous technical qualities, he's very quick, moves cleverly and likes to take defenders on. He's very much like a Wayne Rooney.”

Nilmar's five-year contract stipulates he can be loaned back to Internacional when Elber is fit again. However, the prospect of that clause being invoked disappeared during the youngster's first appearance for Lyon, when as a substitute he scored two expertly-taken goals in a 2-1 win at Rennes.

Nilmar is often compared to former Brazilian international Bebeto. Besides their adolescent looks, they share many playing characteristics – the ability to float from central to wide areas, the delicate touch, the elegance, the instant appreciation of options, the sharp finishing.
Nilmar, born in Bandeirantes in the southern state of Parana, joined Internacional at 17 and has truly blossomed over the past two years.

He was a member of the Brazil Under-23 side who were runners-up to Mexico at the 2003 Gold Cup and later that year helped his country claim the World Youth Cup in the United Arab Emirates.

Kaka, Diego, Robinho, Adriano, Luis Fabiano and now Nilmar. Young and gifted Brazilian footballers never seem to stop sprouting.

Danijel Ljuboja - VfB Stuttgart

Fact File:

Club: VfB Stuttgart
Country: Serbia & France
Born: Septembre 4, 1978, in Vinkovci
Previous clubs: FC Paris St. Germain, Racing Strasbourg, FC Sochaux, Red Star Belgrade, NK Osijek, Dynamo Vinkovci
Position: striker
Serbia international (8 caps)

an article about Ljuboja:
Three seasons ago Danijel Ljuboja thought that his dream has come true with joining Paris Saint Germain and for a short period of time it was really well for him at Parc des Princes when he in the first six months on a loan scored five goals in 17 matches and was announced a s a big signing in summer of 2004. Unfortunately as soon as he signed a contract with the Parisian giant everything went downwards and he spent more time on the bench than in the first eleven.

That is why he was loaned out this summer to VfB Stuttgart with an option left for the German club to buy of his contract incase he fulfill their officials and coaching staff expectations.

The Italian chief in charge Giovanni Trapattoni given Ljuboja a chance already this weekend, although the Serb started the match against Arminia Bielefeld (finished 1:1) from the bench in the second half coming on for Mario Gomez, the 27 year old had a chance or two.

Former Strasbourg goal-scorer had his best opportunity to score a few moments after Jon Dahl Tomasson scored the leading goal for VfB but he didn’t place a good head shot on Jesper Gronkjaer’s cross and the ball just went wide of Mathias Hain’s goal.

Last season Ljuboja played on 25 league games for PSG out of which in thirteen occasions he came on just as a substitute and overall he scored just two goals what is for the striker who blasted 15 goals in 38 duels for Strasbourg during 2001/02 season quite low and bellow his level.

Retired Belgian international, Phillipe Albert, was bought from Anderlecht by Kevin Keegan in the days of building a championship winning team. A little interesting background on the player, he used to be a striker back in his native league and it is little wonder that when the man scores, it is usually a pretty spectacular one. Geordies will always remember his goal that completed the thrashing of Manchester United. The lob was just sailing over Rudolph who was just standing there and watching it enter. Albert was often criticised for his venture up front and thus neglecting his original duty at the back but this season he had held back well. The start of the season saw him relegated to the bench and when Dalglish started selling Keegan's signings, Albert thought that his future is over for him. However, a change of luck came for him in the closing of the season. Injuries to Steve Howey and Darren Peacock's contract dispute saw him regain his first team spot. The 31 year old defender never took it for granted and played his heart out. His understanding with new defensive partner, Greek defender, Nikolaos Dabizas saw a tough defence wall that is unseen in Keegan's days and he believes that things can only get better for the club. However, at the point to writing, Newcastle has approached Markus Babbel of Bayern Munich and this might finally mean the ending of one of the most entertaining defender that the Geordies will see in time to come.

BARRY HAYLES

Barry joined Millwall in August 2004 just in time to beat the deadline for UEFA Cup qualification, but sadly picked up a rib injury on his debut at Ipswich.

Having started out with Stevenage Borough, Barry came to prominence after moving to Bristol Rovers where he established himself as a prolific goalscorer, netting 34 times in 66 League starts for The Gas before a £200,000 fee took him to Fulham. Whilst with The Cottagers, Hayles gained Premiership experience and also featured in their 2002/3 campaign, and in total found the net more than 50 times for the West London outfit.

Having been released during the summer of 2004, he joined Sheffield United, but after just four appearances at Bramall Lane the 32-year-old front man returned to London with The Lions and had a solid debut campaign, netting 12 goals.

Previous clubs: Stevenage, Bristol Rovers, Fulham, Sheffield United

Lions debut: v. Ipswich Town (A) 12th September 2004

TEDDY SHERINGHAM

Teddy Sheringham began his career with Millwall as an apprentice. Following loan spells at Aldershot and Djurgaarden in Sweden, and after playing 220 league appearances for Millwall, scoring 93 goals, he was bought by Nottingham Forest in 1991 where he came to prominence.

Whilst at Forest he played with a young Roy Keane. At the end of his first full season at the City Ground, Sheringham was sold to Tottenham Hotspur for £2.1 million. At Spurs he made 166 League appearances and scored 76 League goals.A full international, Sheringham played an important part in England's success in Euro 96.

However, concerned that at the age of 31 he had yet to win a major trophy, he asked for a transfer in the summer of 1997 and was bought by Manchester United in the summer of 1997 for £3.5 million from Tottenham Hotspur.

He made his debut for United, ironically at White Hart Lane, against his old club Spurs. His season, after a good start began to falter after January and United finished pot-less. He was also a member of the England World Cup squad in 1998, playing in two games.

Sheringham's intelligent passing and creativity make him a dangerous player who can find the key to unlock opposition defences. His impact on games where he comes on as substitute is noticeable as he gives United an extra set of attacking options. Not only this but his aerial power gives the United attack height that it lacks with Cole,Yorke and Solskjaer.

After being overshadowed by the Yorke-Cole strike partnership for most of the 1998-99 season, Teddy Sheringham came good at the end of the season. Sheringham's role in United's treble of 1998-99 was considerable. He scored the opening goal in the FA Cup Final win over Newcastle and the last minute equaliser against Bayern Munich in the Champions League final. Not only that but he also set up Solskjaer's winner with a header. While many had written him off he still had impressive performances against Juventus, Arsenal (the FA Cup Replay) Sheffield Wednesday and Bayern, which showed his ability was as good as ever.

Having came to United to win trophies, after the failure of last year Teddy was able to put an end to the terrace taunt that followed his every appearance. Finally he was a winner and what a winner. Premier League, FA Cup and European Cup medals all in the one magnificent season. So, the song now goes: "Oh Teddy Teddy, you joined Man United and you won it all".

The 1999-2000 season saw Teddy in much the same role as a super-sub but he still made a valuable contribution coring vital goals against Sheffield Wednesday and Arsenal (which shut up the taunting Gooners fans). After specualation about his future Teddy signed a deal in May keeping him at Old Trafford for another season.

The Babyfaced Assassin- OLE GUNNAR SOLSKJAER

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer
Squad Number: 20
Position: Forward
Place of Birth: Kristiansund, Norway
Date Of Birth: 26/ 02/ 1973
Height: 5'9
Weight: 11st 9lbs

This Season
Appearances: 0(0)
Goals: 0
Yellow Cards: 0
Red Cards: 0
Minutes on Pitch: 0

When Alex Ferguson failed to sign Alan Shearer, he plumped for this relatively unknown Norwegian striker. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer had scored a lot of goals in his career, and he did not disappoint at the start of his United career, scoring six minutes into his debut as a substitute against Blackburn in the Premiership.

Solskjaer went on to score 18 Premiership goals for United, helping United to the title in the last weeks of the season. The United fans nicknamed him the 'Baby-Faced Assasin' because of his youthful looks and deadly finishing.

He is something of a super-sub, gainsing particular praise for scoring no less than four in the last minutes of United's 8-1 thrashing of Nottingham Forest.

Despite no guarantees of a first team place, Ole enjoys life at Old Trafford to such an extent a £5.5m bid by Tottenham, among others, in 1998 failed to lure him away. United fans were mightily grateful, as the slightly built Norwegian went on to score the winning goal in the Champions League Final in 1999.

He is a firm favourite, inspiring many songs from "Who put the ball in the Germans net?" to (to the tune of You are my Sunshine) "You are my Solskjaer."

He finally got the chance to stake a claim for a regular place in 2001/02, alongside Ruud van Nistelrooy, and he took the chance with characteristic incisiveness, forcing Andrew Cole and Dwight Yorke onto the subs bench in his usual place.

By 2002/03, both had left Old Trafford and Solskjaer had only the hardly-prolific Diego Forlan to compete with for places, but Ferguson's persistance in playing van Nistelrooy up front on his own meant that oppportunities were still limited.

However, he still got his chance when David Beckham picked up an injury and the versatile Norwegian was played on the right wing. He proved himself to be a fine crosser of the ball, and still managed to pop up with crucial goals, sixteen in total for the season. The high point of his campaign was almost certainly when he was selected on the right wing against Real Madrid while Beckham was left on the bench.

When Beckham joined Madrid, it seemed to be Solskjaer's real chance for a regular place on the right wing, but he suffered a cruel injury blow which kept him out of the team for six months. He returned before the end of the season but took time to get match practice.

Sadly such bad luck continued into the 2004/05 season where knee surgery kept stopped him from playing any games whatsoever for United.

This season, he has suffered another setback in his recovery, but is expected to be back in training later this month.

Ryan Giggs

He is one of United's most decorated and successful ever servants, yet Ryan Giggs might never have graced Old Trafford had it not been for a knock at the door from Sir Alex Ferguson on his 14th birthday.

Cardiff-born Giggs gained his initial football grounding with Dean's Youth FC, whose coach, Denis Schofield, later referred him to Manchester City's School of Excellence.

At the time of Fergie's visit to his house, Giggs had been told that he no longer had a future at City and consequently jumped at the United boss’s offer to sign schoolboy forms with the Reds.

He turned professional in November 1990 and made his League debut against Everton at Old Trafford on 2 March 1991 as a sub for Denis Irwin.

Giggs’ first League start proved to be a memorable occasion as he scored his first ever United goal (albeit via a wicked deflection!) in a 1-0 win over his former club in the Manchester derby.

An injury to Lee Sharpe enabled Giggs to pin down a regular first team place at the start of the 1991/92 season. Despite his initial recurring hamstring problems (which have since eased), he soon made the left-wing position his own thanks to his memorising dribbling skills and blistering pace.

He collected his first piece of silverware in April 1992 as United defeated Nottingham Forest in the League Cup final after Giggs had set up Brian McClair to bag the only goal of the game.

The following season saw Giggs claim the first of his eight Premiership medals and he also became the first player to be named the PFA's Young Player of the Year for the second consecutive year.

Giggs also has European Cup, European Super Cup and Inter-Continental Cup winners’ medals to his name, while he has played a major part in four of Sir Alex Ferguson's five FA Cup triumphs.

Indeed, English football's oldest Cup competition will forever be synonymous with the Reds winger after he scored one of the greatest goals ever witnessed in the semi-final replay against Arsenal in April 1999.

Giggs celebrated his 10-year anniversary at Old Trafford with a testimonial match against Celtic at the start of the 2001/02 campaign, while a year later he bagged his 100th career goal for United in the 2-2 draw with Chelsea at Stamford Bridge.

The 2-1 victory over Liverpool on 20 September 2004 saw Giggs become only the third player to play 600 games for United alongside Sir Bobby Charlton (759) and Bill Foulkes (688).

The climax to the 2004/05 season saw Giggs agree a new deal which will keep him at the club until 2008.

Alick Jeffry

Alick Jeffrey the Doncaster Rovers’ president has died in a Spanish hospital following a heart attack at the age of 61. He had been the president of the club for two years. His last wish was that his ashes should be scattered over Belle Vue. John Ryan the chairman of Rovers said that his ashes would be scattered in both goal mouth areas at the first home fixture following his funeral.

Jeffrey was a legend to the Rovers’ fans. In 262 games for the club he scored 129 goals. Former England coach Kevin Keegan, once said that in his opinion Alick Jeffrey was the finest footballer to ever come out of Doncaster.

He was born in Rawmarsh a small village near Rothertham in South Yorkshire in 1939. At the age of 15 Alick played inside forward for Rotherham Boys, Yorkshire Boys and England schoolboys. In the same year Alick Jeffrey joined the ground staff at Doncaster Rovers. At the time Rovers were a second division team. Before he joined Rovers he had been invited to play in a five-a-side match by Manchester United boss Matt Busby. Busby told Jeffrey that: “I will come and get you in time.”

Jeffrey made his first team debut Rovers in September 1954 against Fulham. In doing so he became the youngest player ever to play in a league match since the Second World War. Jackie Milburn claimed: “Alick is the best youngster I have ever seen.”

A year later a 16-year-old Alick scored twice against Aston Villa in a replay to knock them out of the FA Cup. Also in 1955, Alick appeared for both the Engaland Youth side and England Amateurs and became known as soccer’s wonder boy. After an amateur International in 1956 Sir Stanley Mathews said: “Alick shows genius.” However in the same year tragedy struck the 17 year old Alick. While playing for the England under-23 side against France he broke a leg in two places. Only days before the match Alick had been in talks with Matt Busby about joining Manchester United.

In 1957 while he was out of action he formed a club act with another Rovers player. His partner was Charlie Williams. Three years after breaking his Alick received some compensation from the FA because the injury had happened while he was on International duty.

1959 saw Alick making a full recovery from his injury and joined Skegness Town. However in August Alick broke his other leg. Two years later he made a full recovery and he was ready to re-join Doncaster Rovers now in the fourth division. However Alick was refused permission by the FA to play unless he repaid the compensation he had received. As a result Jeffrey emigrated to Australia and played for the Australian side Prague.

In 1963 the FA relented over the repayment of the compensation and in December 1963, Alick returned to play for Rovers. Two seasons later he was the leading goalscorer in the fourth division and his goals helped Rovers win promotion to Division three. After winning promotion, tragedy again hit Alick Jeffrey. He was badly injured in a car accident in which club captain John Nicholson was killed. Alick was out of action for several months but eventually he returned to play for rovers. In 1969 he left Rovers and played one season for Lincoln City

Olivier is 27 years old and is a full international with the Ivory Coast. He has already played for Steve Bruce when he was at Sheffield United.

The performances that Olivier gave for the Blades attracted the attention of Glasgow Celtic in 1999 and, after just eight appearances for the South Yorkshire club, the Glasgow giants bought him for just £1.25million. He made 51 appearances for the club before a £700,000 move to St Andrews in March 2002.

On joining City, Olivir made ten appearances for the club in the run-up to the play-offs and in the play-offs themselves, he featured in all three matches, helping City claim their place in the Barclaycard Premiership. Much was expected of Tebily in the following months, after he deputised so well for Darren Purse during his suspension, one of the reasons Steve Bruce brought him in.

Despite being a French national, Tebily has earned 16 international caps for the Ivory Coast.

Despite missing a large portion of the Blues' first season in the top flight, Olivier still managed to play in 13 games for the St.Andrews side, showing that he is a valuable squad player and that Steve Bruce has plenty of confidence in him.

Sadly for Tebily, both the 2003/04 and 2004/05 seasons proved to be slightly disappointing as he struggled to impose himself in the first-team. However, he has proved himself as a crucial utility player and will doubtlessly be an important part of Bruce's plans for some eyars to come.

Tebily's Birmingham career to date has consisted of 45 appearances, though he has still to score his first goal.

Dennis Bergkamp

Last updated 18 February 2003

Current Club: Arsenal

Birth date: May 10 1969
Birth place: Amsterdam
Birth Nation: Netherlands
Height: 182cm
Weight: 77kg
Nationality: Netherlands
Position: Forward

Full Name: Dennis Nicolaas Bergkamp

Despite the spelling he was named after Denis Law by his footie-mad father. He was forced to play wide at Ajax in the early days of his career as the great Marco van Basten held the centre forward position.

He moved to Inter Milan, where he endured 2 unhappy years before he made his, then club record, £7.5 million move to Arsenal. Chelsea said that they turned him down because their manager at the time, Glenn Hoddle, had too many foreigners already!
