Julien Dicks would have eaten Vinnie Jones alive. There is a difference between being hard and dirty.

Bit like the time when Vinnie floored 6 Hull players all on his own in 1990, he also scored a 35 volley, what a goal. Makes me laugh everytime I watch the promotion video. Vinnie was a hard bastard on the pitch, make no mistake about it. I'd have him in our team now over any of our midfield.

QUOTE
As Paul Scharner once said; "Duncan Ferguson elbowed me in the neck three times and I was beginning to get a bit angry. I swore at him in Austrian and I know he couldn't possibly have understood it. Even so, he suddenly swung round and thumped me in the stomach. He got sent off, but I began to appreciate how he earned his reputation as a hard man. It was a nice punch, I have to say."

Great quote. Without being particularly dirty, I think Scharner himself is rather hard by today's standards.

As for the hardest, three players stick out for me: Duncan Ferguson, Vinnie Jones, and Stuart Pearce.

Oh god, how could I forget, the legend himself. In fairness though he has toned it down over the past couple of years.

If only their was a picture of him breaking Dugarry's leg.

Olli Kahn is insane, he should definitely be up there. ...Although I'm not sure now that I caught him crying against Getafe.

And for the rest: Japie Stam!

Bremner was a real hard man, crunching tackles and one of the greatest midfielders ever. Norman Hunter was also probably harder, he put in killer tackles and yet was still liked because he apologised.

The definition of "hard" is something people need to clear up.

It's not "kicks people up in the air" a la Savage, it's not an Essien-esque "made of stone" or a Vinnie Jones style violent temprement. Being hard basically means you not only snap people in half by looking at them, but you can take a bullet in the face without flinching.

On that basis, I would say as well as Stuart Pearce, John Terry should get a mention. This is a guy who'll snap off 2 toes, play on and not tell the medics till the final whistle. He's a cunt and a total prick, but he's also a pretty hard bastard.

Chopper Harris is of course up there, but the ultimate king of hardness has to Brian Clough.

Roy Keane? He made a twat of himself at SJP, tried to act the hard man and Shearer just stood there. Shearer is harder than Keane if you look at the way Ian put it. Keane just lost his temper easily, doesn't make him hard like.

Actually I do have to agree with Tsatalia there. Shearer had balls, so he wouldn't back down to Keane, but as well as being a thug (Alf-Inge Haland incident) Keane could both give and take a kicking whilst also playing a decent game. Sorry but Keane WAS harder than Shearer.
