Graveyard Shift

Been doing the graveyard this week.

This isn't the first time I chose the life of a vampire. Life on the overnight, as anyone who has ever worked it knows, definitely has it's advantages. Namely, lack of employees, mostly bosses, in your orbit and on your back. For the most part I work alone at night so I usually have the iPod on and can go 3 or so hours without seeing anyone. It's not a bad shift, the people are alright but it's certainly not something I want to do permanently but for which I have agreed to cover for a month. Still trying to get use to the time change.

Tonight was no different, that is, until a winded and sweating strange man approached me a moment ago and asked if he could, "Please use the bathroom." I pointed him in the right direction and after he left I immediately called the security guard at the front desk, who, of course, didn't answer. It didn't matter because in my mind he was already dead, gutted, and I wasn't waiting around to be next. I grabbed up my jacket, car keys and cell phone and was escaping this soon to be abattoir. As I made way to freedom I noted that I saw no one in the many labs and offices I passed. Not a sole from what should be anywhere from 15-20 individuals, my fellow vampires, who comprise the company's graveyard shift. It didn't matter, I was now on a quick pace to my car and safety from any meat hooks.

I was just about to my vehicle when the strange man who was suppose to be using the bathroom called out to me to, "Stop!" I turn to see him jogging for me. I freaked, uncapped the small canister of mace I kept on my key chain, flung open the driver's side door, jumped in, slammed the door shut and punched the locks. The guy palms the roof of my car, his face is at my window, "Can you give me a jump?" he yells. I start my car, begin backing up. "No, I can't help (him) call AAA." He punches my car, screams, "Get the fuck out!" I hit the gas and nearly run him over, but then I fishtail into a ditch and get stuck. At this point he's armed himself with a 4 foot metal pipe off a temporary 'no parking' sign and is now walking toward me and my crippled car, my tires spinning wildly.

Then I hear this buzzing sound? At first I think it's the car but soon I become aware the car is melting and then so am I. Things blur and as my eyes begin to focus I see a small Korean man holding a brown paper bag a few feet away. I sit up. I'm not driving, I'm at my desk. That's Kwan the deliver guy from the Korean take out down the street and I've been, embarrassingly enough, sleeping, dreaming.

Kwan smiles, "You eat now?"

I pay him. Tip him well.

I'd like to dedicate this thread to Kwan, one of many vampires who diligently work beneath the moon, and who saved me from a blood thirsty serial killer.

Yeah its another day for the shops to make money off us, but I've tried to not do that this year but still make it a nice day for my Mum. Hand made her a card, got her a box of her fav Thorntons chocs and I'm cooking her a roast dinner followed by pudding. MARRIED Take That star Mark Owen last night sensationally confessed to having TEN affairs.
The "squeaky clean" singer opened his heart to The Sun in a bid to wipe the slate clean and start afresh with his wife Emma.

Mark, 38, broke the news of his cheating to Emma, mum of their two kids, at their London home yesterday.

He said: "She loves me and I let her down. I'm really sorry."

The multi-millionaire singer blamed a long battle with booze for his two-timing, which will shock millions of the chart-topping band's adoring fans.

And he told The Sun: "I have been an idiot, a d***head, a k***head. All of the above and more."

Benefits

I watched the Famous, Rich and Jobless programme on BBC 1 tonight, for any of you that don't know about it its a programme about 4 famous (ish) people who firstly are given job seekers allowance and told to find job. That goes on for 4 days and they get a run down flat to live in. Now the second episode, they go and live we someone who is unemployed and try to help them (not financially).

Anyway, there is this one family who have 5 kids I think and one on the way....the husband hasn't worked for 7 years and they live in a 6 bedroom house with nearly 600 quid a month in benefits!!! We as tax payers are bloody paying for that and its a complete joke. People see having kids as a way of getting more and more benefits. Now I know there are people who genuinely deserve benefits, but this family were basically just having kids to increase their benefits. Surely in 7 years you would get a break and get some kind of job if you tried hard enough??

I think its disgraceful the way we have to pay for people like this family. They give people who claim benefits a bad name because a lot of people deserve them as they can't work due to illness or something, but others just see having as many kids as possible as a way of getting more money. What a shit life these kids with have, yes money isn't everything but they need clothes and food. These kids were shown running around the house at 1, 2am and the guy who was staying there just left because like me he thought the situation was ridiculous.

But then you have the problem that some people actually earn more having benefits than they would if they had a job the pay is so low!! and there is a rule that if you work more than 16 hrs a week you get your benefits taken off you so they aren't encouraged to work.

Thoughts?

Authorities 'sorry' for rapist Dad failings

Police and local authorities have apologised to a family for failing to protect them from their father who repeatedly raped them, fathering nine children with his daughters.

Two daughters of the man, who is in his 50s and cannot be named for legal reasons, conceived 18 times at the hands of their father.

It is believed that nine children were born but only seven of them survived - two of them have severe physical disabilities.

The abuse began in 1980 when the girls were aged 8 and 10.

Two years ago the man was given 25 life sentences by a court in Sheffield.

Now a serious case review has been published into the role of social workers and police in Lincolnshire and South Yorkshire.

In issuing the apology all the agencies gave assurances that changes in the safeguarding process now offered better protection to children.

Sue Fiennes, from the Sheffield Safeguarding Children Board, said: "We want to apologise to the family at the heart of this case.

"It will be clear that we failed the family.

"We are committed to work relentlessly to do all we can to minimise the risk of this happening again."

Throughout the 30 years the man moved his family 67 times to maintain his secret and was only arrested after his daughters eventually found the courage to go to the police.

The case echoes that of Austrian Josef Fritzl, who had seven children with one of his daughters.

The report into this latest case highlights deficiencies in the sharing of information between agencies and of record keeping.

Shortly after the man was sentenced, prime minister Gordon Brown said people would want to know how such abuse could go on for so long.

The report includes a number of recommendations for change.

Shes a fucking joke. She rents out a house in Leeds yet lives way down south near London, she only visits the house 2 maybe 3 times a year and does no maintenence what so ever. There are big cracks everywhere, there is water damage from a leak, some of the carperts are so thin they need replacing, one wall of the bathroom needs re-plastering or something as its full of mould because she can't be arsed getting a fan in there.

I even had to drive to a carpet place in Leeds last year to get a carpet picked for her! I'm the only one in the house who can be around for work done so I've had to be in about 10 times so british gas, builders etc can come in and do work. Then theres the mobile phone bills for arranging for these people to come round etc.

The heating keeps going hence what started this rant, british gas did a yearly service and days later the pilot light kept going so we got someone in to fix it and a week later its gone again so we keep having to manually re-light it. Its just one problem after another!

And now she has the cheek to ask my bf to pay for HER travel expenses up here because he wants to end his contract and the only way he can is by getting someone else in to rent it. She wants him to pay for her to come up here (£40 minimum I would have thought) when the person moving in signs the contract for the house.

Fucking disgrace, cannot wait to move out from this shit hole in June!!! She must be loaded, 65 quid a week for each room with 4 of us living here and she does fuck all maintenence on the house.

Quote

A 101-year-old woman in China has baffled doctors after growing a huge goat-like horn on her forehead.

Zhang Ruifang claims the growth first appeared only last year and has since expanded to be more than 6cm long, Britain’s Daily Mail newspaper reports.

PHOTOS: Woman's horn stuns family

Now her family in Linlou, Henan province, are concerned about a second mark on the other side of her forehead.

"[At first] we didn’t pay too much attention to it," said Mrs Zhang’s youngest son Zhang Guozheng.

"Now something is also growing on the right side of her forehead — it’s quite possible that it’s another horn."

Mrs Zhang’s growth has not been officially diagnosed but the newspaper said it was most likely an extreme version of a cutaneous horn.

Cutaneous horns are made up of keratin — the protein found in fingernails — and are typically seen in elderly people who have had prolonged exposure to sunlight.

But the growths are usually only a few millimetres in length.

Cutaneous horns can be surgically removed but there is no way to cure the condition, meaning they may grow back.

Quote

A South Korean couple who were addicted to the internet let their three-month-old baby starve to death while raising a virtual daughter online, police said.

The pair fed their own premature baby just once a day in between 12-hour stretches at an internet cafe, the official Yonhap news agency reported.

Police officer Chung Jin-won told Yonhap they "lost their will to live a normal life" after losing their jobs.

He said they "indulged themselves online" to escape from reality.

The 41-year-old father and his 25-year-old wife were arrested in the city of Suweon, south of Seoul, earlier this week, five months after they reported the death of their baby.

An autopsy showed her death was caused by a long period of malnutrition.

The couple had become obsessed with nurturing a virtual girl called Anima in the popular role-playing game Prius Online, police said on Friday.

The game enables players to interact with Anima and as they do so, help her to recover her lost memory and develop emotions.

James Bulger murderer Jon Venables returned to prison

One of the killers of two-year-old James Bulger is back in prison after breaching the terms of his release, the Ministry of Justice has said.

Jon Venables, now 27, and his friend, Robert Thompson, murdered James in Bootle, Merseyside, in 1993. Both killers were aged just 10 at the time.

They were given life sentences, but released in 2001 with new identities and under certain licence conditions.

The ministry did not detail the nature of Venables' breach of his licence.

Mother's 'anxiety'

It said in a statement: "We can confirm that Jon Venables has been recalled to custody following a breach of licence conditions.
"Offenders on licence are subject to strict conditions; if they breach those conditions they are subject to immediate recall."

Venables' solicitor at the time of his trial, Laurence Lee, told the BBC: "He could have been recalled on licence if he committed an offence, it could be that he returned to Merseyside, it could be he might have approached the family.

"There is no evidence so far that he did any of these things."

Retired Det Supt Albert Kirby, who led the murder inquiry, said he was surprised Venables was back behind bars.

He added: "I've always thought, with regards to that particular boy, that from what we've heard over the years there was every possibility he would have avoided going back into prison."

A relative of Denise Fergus, James's mother, said the family had no plans to comment on Venables' return to prison at this time.

But Mr Kirby told BBC News he had spoken to James's mother and the news had brought "a whole load of anxiety" back to her.

He said: "There's always been a lot of anxiety as to where both boys are.

"To hear something like that this evening; it brings back to her a lot of the concerns, quite understandably, that she and any other parents in these sorts of circumstances would have."
'Unparalleled barbarity'

On 13 February 1993, Venables and Thompson abducted James from a shopping centre in Bootle and killed him on a railway line.

A week-long appeal followed, with CCTV footage being released of the little boy holding the hand of one of his killers as he was led out of the Strand shopping centre.

The toddler had been approached and befriended by the two boys while his mother was in a shop.

James's body was found by children playing on a freight railway line near Walton Lane police station.

He had been beaten to death with bricks and an iron bar.

The 10-year-old killers were arrested days later and became the youngest to be charged with murder in the 20th Century.

Eight months later they were convicted following a 17-day trial at Preston Crown Court and ordered to be detained at Her Majesty's pleasure.

Trial judge Mr Justice Morland told the pair they had committed a crime of "unparalleled evil and barbarity".

In 1999 the European Court of Human Rights decided they should not have been tried in an adult court.

Despite public outcry, two years later the parole board recommended their release as they "were no longer a danger to society".

More than 300,000 people signed a petition saying the sentence of eight years was too short.

Both Thompson and Venables were given new identities when they were released.

An order prohibiting the publication of details which could reveal their whereabouts has remained in place since their release.
While they may have only been young, they knew what they were doing and plenty of kids that age don't torture and brutally murder a toddler. Who knows what those two are capable of if they can do that at such a young age, anyone saying they 'deserve a second chance' should consider what (second) chance they gave Jamie Bulger.
Still google doesn't produce as many hits for this as Madelaine McCann or Sarah Payne (as in 'Sarah's law')

Jamie Bulger 38,900 hits
Madelaine McCann 891,000 hits
Sarah Payne 797,000 hits
