PLTV?

Hey guys, this is more like a question for the foreigners or people living abroad the UK. Do you know about PLTV?

This is something fairly new so let me explain it a little.

Basically when you're living abroad the UK, e.g. Middle East, you need to subscribe to certain networks that give you coverage of premier league matches.

Like sometimes the exclusivity rights are bought by Al-Jazeera sports, other times it's bought by Showtime Sports, etc. In North America it's usually Fox Soccer Channel, Gol TV and Setanta Sports.

Anyway, this season the rights were bought by Abu Dhabi sports. They have channels in both English and Arabic. The Arabic channel is based in Abu Dhabi but the English channel is based in a London studio. It's called PLTV. So these guys have phone-ins and everything after the matches are over. I thought this was only for Middle Eastern viewers at first but when the phone-in started we were hearing from callers all over the world. People from Singapore, Norway, Nigeria, etc.

So did Premier League make some official TV network or something this year? Did they copy the NFL network or something? Usually American leagues have their own TV channels so did the English finally implement this technique as well?

Rovers new ticket pricing policy

Quote

Blackburn Rovers launch new 'dynamic' pricing structureBlackburn Rovers have reduced prices to £10 for their next home game against Fulham – and they have announced plans to vary the cost of tickets throughout the 2010/11 season.

Rovers’ next match at Ewood Park sees Mark Hughes return to East Lancashire with his new Fulham side for a Premier League clash on Saturday, September 18 at 3pm.

It has been announced that tickets in all areas of the stadium will be available at £10 for adults and £5 for concessions.

In previous seasons Rovers banded their fixtures into price categories for matchday tickets, depending on the opposition.

But the club have now unveiled plans to vary prices throughout the current campaign based on a number of different factors.

The ‘dynamic pricing policy’ will see prices adjusted depending on the day of the week the match is played on, the ‘attractiveness’ of the opposition, how crucial the match is in terms of league position, whether the game is live on television and even the weather forecast.

Simon Williams, head of commercial and marketing, said: “We are constantly trying to find ways to make watching football at Ewood Park as attractive and appealing as possible.

“The move to introduce ‘dynamic pricing’ comes after discussions with supporters.

"Feedback to our research has provided us with a clear understanding of the many factors which determine whether someone attends or not.

“Our objective is to get as many people here as possible as we strive to continue our magnificent home form and we believe ‘dynamic pricing’ will help to achieve that.

“It is a real innovation in top class football and we hope people are as excited as us at the concept and the possibilities.

“We cannot control the weather, but we can take into account some of the other factors involved and this will affect our pricing of each particular game.”

“The Fulham fixture is not on television and it carries a 3pm kick-off time on a Saturday.

“Fulham do not travel in huge numbers.

"Historically, it does not produce one of our bigger attendances and we felt it was a perfect chance to launch dynamic pricing.

“It is a great all-round offer for everyone.

"We hope we can generate a bigger-than-average crowd for this fixture which will, in turn, create a great atmosphere for what should be a cracking game.”

Source: LET

Lets face it, this is only the thing clubs should do if they don't sell out every week, but I still think its a cracking idea. Many teams who don't sell out get their lowest attendance against Fulham (added to by the fact Fulham only bring a couple of hundred themselves) so the fact its only £10 should attract a few more people. These are the games we need to win, so hopefully by having more home fans in the ground will help cheer on the players to victory like it has done in the past. If anything we will lose money or not make very much (and for a club like us that is a big issue as we didn't spend a penny this summer on transfers) so for us to do this shows a big push to genuinely want to increase our fan base. Long term if people get hooked then hopefully it will make us more money, and if we get 3 points it will push us up the table and ultimately get us more money too.

But as usual, fair play to the club but they always think about their fans. Yes its because we haven't got the biggest fan base but do you see clubs like Wigan, Bolton, Brum etc doing the same thing and putting in so much effort? So many factors come into play when people go to matches and the club know this and will price the tickets accordingly to tempt fans who maybe be 50/50 about going as they could easily watch it down the pub or have to wait and extra hour for a train home.

Barry Calls For Prem Winter Break

Gareth Barry says the Premier League must introduce a winter break to save England from another World Cup disaster.

Barry believes a short rest is "massive" when it comes to international football and was one of the biggest factors as to why England under-performed last summer.

Manchester City midfielder Barry admits England players went into the tournament already worn out from a long, hard season.

Barry said: "In my opinion, in South Africa, to be competing at our peak would have meant we needed fresh players. If a winter break can help, that certainly needs to be looked at, in my personal opinion, that is a massive thing.

"We have to look at things like winter breaks, as that is an issue which keeps coming up. Ask any players who plays on a Sunday, plays midweek and then plays the week after. You don't feel as good.

"If you are rested in the week, like will happen at Man City due to the size of the squad, you will feel better the week after. It is just natural.

"Me, as a younger player, would say I want to play every game and it doesn't affect me. It is a tough one, for the fans as well.

"Their opinion will always be we are paid all this money and we are fit enough to play all the games. But, as you get more experienced, you can perform at a higher standard when you are fresher."

Barry was rushed back from injury for the World Cup, jettisoned into the England team as if his return would be as big for Fabio Capello as David Villa was for Spain.

But it ended in disappointment for England and Barry, his lack of match fitness against Germany horribly exposed and Capello's faith in an injured player showing how desperate things had become.

There has been plenty of time for Barry to try and look for answers and reasons and one accusation that really sticks in the claw is that the players simply do not care enough.

Barry said: "Of course, we care. It is hard to take defeat, for anyone. When it is you being spoken about, it is hard to deal with. As you say, we need to learn from this. England as a whole, the FA, we will learn from in the future.

"The whole set-up, if there were mistakes or things could be done, it is important we take them on board for the future. I am not saying there were mistakes - I could not affect it.

"As players we were thinking the same as you and did not want to bring negativity into the camp. Maybe in individual heads it may have been there.

"I had not played for six weeks and wanted to get fit. Maybe as individuals, we felt we were not as fresh as we are now. You always want to compete in those events at your peak and raring to go.

"But I am not sitting here making excuses as other countries have the same sort of problems."

Congrats to the lads who made this happen

United chief executive David Gillhttp://static.lingospot.com/spot/
image/spacer.gif has confirmed the club failed to reach their target of season-ticket sales this summer.

Gill said the number of season tickets sold was 51,800 compared to the target of 54,000, and that executive seat sales were "on track".

United's season ticket sales have been conducted against a backdrop of a campaign by fans' group the Manchester Unitedhttp://static.lingospot.com/spot/
image/spacer.gif Supporters' Trust (MUST) urging a boycott in the hope of persuading the American owners, the Glazer family, to sell the club.

Asked about the season-ticket protest, Gill said: "I'll be clear on that. Last year our target was 54,000 season tickets, we've sold 51,800, which is pretty good in the current climate.

"We've sold more season tickets than the capacity of most Premier League grounds. Our executive seat sales are on track as compared with last year in a different market.

"I think the bare facts are that the club is in good financial shape. The ticket sales have held up. We sold out for Newcastlehttp://static.lingospot.
com/spot/image/spacer.gif and West Ham but we are not complacent and we've got to keep working to make sure that we fill the ground for every game and we'll do that by playing great football, attractive football, exciting football that brings fans in."

-----------------------------------------
---------------------

Sadly, the club has so many fans that regardless of season tickets not being sold, home games for now, will always be a sell out

A trophyless season again I think may piss off the wider majority of fans

Quote

Sunderland forward Fraizer Campbell will miss six months of the season due to the serious knee injury he sustained against Manchester City on Sunday.
The 22-year-old Campbell was injured in a tackle with City defender Micah Richards in Sunderland's 1-0 win. "He has ruptured his cruciate knee ligaments so he's going to be out for at least six months," said Sunderland manager Steve Bruce. "It's a tragedy."
Campbell joined Sunderland for £3.5m from Manchester United in July 2009.
The England under-21 star previously had loan spells at Hull City and Tottenham before eventually joining the Black Cats.
A massive shame for the player and Sunderland because like Bruce said, he was just finding some form then suffers such a bad injury. Hopefully he fully recovers and can get back into the Sunderland side.

West Ham sign right back Jacobsen

This deal looks likely to go through, just waiting on Premier League approval. West Ham may think why are they signing someone who can't even get in the Rovers side, but believe me Jacobsen is a very underrated player. He is very consistent, gets forward well and hasn't really had a poor game for us he is just unlucky that Salgado is at the club right now. The only downside is hes had a few injuries in the last few seasons, but I've no doubt he'll be a very solid signing for West Ham.

Help me pick a team

So obviously I'm a little new to the scene of English Premier League Football. Really, the only "Football" I used to watch was the NFL http://www.totalfootballforums.com/forums/
public/style_emoticons/default/thumbsup.gif
. But after watching the World Cup and getting captivated by all those matches, vuvuzelas and hooligans and what not. I decided to watch some of the EPL teams, assuming that I would naturally start supporting one of the clubs. But apparently, I have no opinion since I'm all the way in the States and I just wanted to see a good match. But qualities I look for in a team are a strong loyal fan base, (even if it is considerably small.) A Rivalry, I would love to have a team to hate. And a cool looking jersey, or....kit? I also love the underdogs, so I would prefer to stray from the bandwagon teams.Oh, and a cool little nickname would be appreciated. I've done a little research and found that I'm drawn to Manchester City, because of their underdog quality, heated rivalry with United and their light blue jerseys. I also liked Fullham because they are notorious for signing American players, and their neat nickname the "Cottagers."
Now obviously I haven't came to a final decision, and would like a second opinion. Now tell me forum, who should I support?

Di Santo links with Wigan

Quote

Sky Sports News understands Wigan have contacted Chelsea regarding a deal for Franco Di Santo. Discussions between the two clubs have now begun with both sides open to the prospect of an agreement being struck.

Wigan are keen to bolster their attacking options following a disjointed start to the season, while Chelsea are prepared to cash in on a player well down their striking pecking order.

With first-team opportunities at Stamford Bridge likely to be difficult to come by for Di Santo this season, he too is likely to favour a switch.

Promise

The promising Argentine took in a spell at Blackburn Rovers on loan last season, scoring once in 25 appearances.

That return is not the best, but the experience he picked up at Ewood Park could prove invaluable.

Wigan are prepared to take a gamble on the 21-year-old frontman, believing that he still has untapped potential.

Reports suggest that they are prepared to offer around £2million to take him off Chelsea's hands.

He won't make it at Chelsea so the lad will need to move on and going to Wigan seems like a sensible thing to do. He works so damn hard, but the quality in and around the box is lacking. He only scored one goal last season for us despite playing a hell of a lot, especially in the first half of the season. I hope he does well, seems a great guy.

Quote

Stoke City goalkeeper Asmir Begovic has denied on Monday that he went on strike in an effort to force a move to Chelsea.

Stoke manager Tony Pulis claimed that the Bosnia international had refused to play in last week's Carling Cup tie against Shrewsbury to avoid being cup-tied as Stoke turned down a bid from Chelsea.

"I never refused to play. I'd never do such a thing to turn down a chance to play a first-team game," Begovic told the BBC.

"I was aware that there was a bid made and he (Pulis) said it was being considered.

"We spoke about it, it was a private conversation and for it to get out publicly was a little bit disappointing."

Begovic has managed just three games for Stoke since joining last season, and is unhappy at the way the allegations came to light.

"I tried to see (Pulis) before the team meeting but he refused to see me and then he named the team.

"We spoke about the situation and as far as he was concerned he understood the position I was in and he didn't have any problems with me not playing at the time and I thought that was the end of the story but I would never go on strike. That's an absolutely disgraceful accusation for people to make."

Van Persie, who was out for five months last season with ankle ligament damage, suffered a twisted ankle during the Premier League clash with Blackburn at Ewood Park on Saturday.

The KNVB has announced that Van Persie will take no part in the upcoming European Championship qualifiers against San Marino and Finland as a result.

Arsene Wenger had said after the game against Blackburn that he thought Van Persie's injury would be short-term. "It is a twisted ankle," he said. "We will have to check but, if we have no bad news, we hope that in eight to ten days he can be okay."

With Van Persie out of action, Netherlands have called up Hamburg striker Ruud van Nistelrooy, 34, for the first time in two years.

Van Nistelrooy announced his international retirement after Euro 2008 but reversed his decision prior to the 2010 World Cup. He has scored six goals in three games for Hamburg so far this season.
