Rothen the reserve

It has been confirmed that PSG winger Jerome Rothen will train and play with the reserves from now on. Antoine Kombouaré confirmed at the end of last season that Jerome Rothen had no future with the capital-city club however they were unable to find a club for him during the transfer window.

PSG's Deadline Dismay

Quote

Antoine Kombouare, coach of Paris Saint-Germain, has played down his club’s failure to sign a central defender at the close of the transfer window.

In the closing hours of the market, PSG were linked strongly with Valenciennes’ Milan Bisevac, Dynamo Kyiv’s Badr El-Kaddouri and Lokomotiv Moscow’s Marko Basa, yet none of these figures arrived at the Parc des Princes. Siaka Tiene did sign from Valenciennes, but the Ivory Coast international is a left-back and is unable to operate in the centre of the defence.

“My priority was Bisevac,” Kombouare confirmed to RMC. “But in view of his sporting achievements, Valenciennes finally closed the door on Sunday night. We therefore returned to Basa. He's a player I wanted. But Lokomotiv Moscow lost this weekend and vetoed [the deal].

“Finally there was [Pape] Diakhate. But between Lyon, who play the Champions League, and PSG, I understand his choice.

“After that there were opportunities with Italian, English and Dutch defenders, but I did not venture into these choices and I opted for internal solutions.”

Meanwhile, Kombouare has not dismissed the possibility of selling Mateja Kezman and Jerome Rothen.

“In some countries, the market closes [on Wednesday], so they could still move for them,” the coach smiled.

PSG’s start to the season has ultimately been disappointing, despite a promising beginning. Les Parisiens have gone into the international break on the back of a three-game losing streak in all competitions.

Source: Goal.com

I did think PSG would be like a lot of French clubs this summer in strengthening the defensive department. They managed to pull of a great piece of business on the final day for Siaka Tiéné from Valenciennes for just €1m, even though Werder Bremen had been interested earlier in the window and the player himself had his heart set on a move to the Premier League. Kombouaré left it too late to sign a centre-back. This was an area of need - though perhaps not a pressing need for the club. He missed out on not only his first-choice target in this area, but his second-choice target also so it'll be interesting to see what happens come January at Paris Saint-Germain.

Regarding their outgoing transfers, I firmly expected Jerome Rothen to leave the club. This hasn't happened and, whilst there is still time in some foreign markets, I do not expect him to move away at this stage. Mateja Kezman is another player who I thought would leave PSG this summer but has managed to remain on their books. Giuly was told he could leave but has managed to work his way back into the fold following some impressive displays, and a goal, when called upon in European competition.

Hamburg central defender David Rozehnal has joined Lille on-loan for one season. The Czech-international has experience in Ligue 1 following a 2-year spell at Paris Saint-Germain. He has played in France, England, Germany and Italy already in his career. There does not seem to be an option to buy included in the loan.

Lille were in need of some defensive cover and it looks like they've found it. I expect Adil Rami and Aurélien Chedjou to be the first-choice pairing at the back but Rozehnal will definitely have a part to play. Adil Rami seems to have rushed back from an injury picked up early this season already so his fitness may still be a concern to both Lille and France.

Controversial French referee Tony Chapron is at it again apparently. After coming to the forefront of the media during a contorversy when he swore at Valenciennes players almost two years ago, this time he's been caught insulting Brandao.
La Provence states that he told Brandao "One knock, it's your head, another it's your ribs, you're breaking my balls, get up!", without calling on the medics to check on the player. Brandao has given himself this sort of reputation but is this acceptable for a referee, an authority figure on the pitch?

Heinze Angry

Gabriel Heinze is said to be far from happy at the goings on off-the-pitch by his team Olympique de Marseille this summer. The Argentine defender feels that it has had a big effect on how the players prepare for games and even believes this season is going to be harder as a result. Heinze addressed the fact that he feels no-one works to the same objective at Olympique de Marseille and says that he does want to stay at the club but does think that the club need everyone to work towards the same goals in order to succeed.

Heinze seemed to be addressing the point of Marseille's way of going about business this off-season. Dassier's misleading quotes to the media, the sale of top-goalscorer Mamadou Niang without putting up too much of a fight and the Ben Arfa saga seem to have left the players feeling a bit let down. They haven't started the season all too well but it does seem that the togetherness is being worked on if their performance last weekend was anything to go by.

I do think that Rémy and Gignac will be refreshing for the Marseille side who have lost a number of strikers already in the off-season. It'll be interesting to see if their summer dealings are over just yet but with more outgoing transfers mooted, I think there could yet be some more deals going on in Marseille.

Puel Hints at Another Signing

Quote

Olympique Lyonnais general manager Claude Puel has hinted that his side may add to their squad before the transfer window closes on Tuesday.

A spate of hamstring injuries have seriously hampered les Gones in the early weeks of this campaign, with Michel Bastos, Cris, Aly Cissokho and Ederson all picking up injuries to the muscle over the course of the last three weeks. With the Champions League approaching and his squad a little thin on the ground, particularly in defence, Puel may move.

“You never know what can happen,” Puel told his club’s official website. “Until the last moment, things may happen.

"The fact that possibly some of our players are wanted, it can act as musical chairs. In this case, someone would sign for us. The group is balanced but anything is possible.”

President Jean-Michel Aulas hinted that there may be an additional arrival after acquiring Yoann Gourcuff from Girondins de Bordeaux earlier this week, but there have been no standout names linked to the Stade Gerland side in recent weeks.

Source: Goal.com

I don't think Lyon are done with the transfer window just yet with regards to both incoming and outgoing transfers. With only two signings made so far, this has been a comparably quiet year for l'OL. There is a lot of depth in the central midfield position now and I do not see all of the available players being too happy at a possible rotation policy within the team if they all stay. Jean II Makoun has been strongly linked with moves away in recent weeks and I think he could be one of the strongest candidates to be leaving.

Regarding the incoming transfers, there hasn't been too much mooted. The Yoann Gourcuff dealing was fairly quiet, with Aulas giving every indication last week that he would not go back in for the player before Triaud dropping the hint that Lyon had made a bid when Gourcuff was left on the bench at the weekend. I still think Lyon need some defensive reinforcement. I expected money to be spent in this area with interest shown in Adil Rami (who stayed at Lille) and Bruno Alves (who left for Zenit St Petersburg) but nothing came of it. If I was to bet at any position being strengthened, it would be defence.

Maazou to Bordeaux

Quote

Niger attacker Moussa Maazou appears to be on his way out of Russian powerhouse CSKA Moscow as Ligue 1 side Bordeaux have shown an interest in signing the young striker, if a report in L'Equipe is to be believed.

The Girondins are in the market for attacking reinforcements because of the departure of Marouane Chamakh to Arsenal and the ongoing uncertainty about the future of Argentinian striker Fernando Cavenaghi.

New head coach Jean Tigana supposedly sees the 22-year-old Maazou as the perfect addition to his front line and Bordeaux are hopeful to complete the signing of the forward in the upcoming days.

Maazou joined CSKA Moscow from Belgian side Lokeren in January 2009, but he failed to make an impact at the Army Club. Therefore, he was farmed out on loan to Monaco in the second half of last season.

CSKA have reportedly set a €4.5 million asking price for Maazou and Bordeaux seem to be willing to meet the Russian side's demands.

With Bordeaux earning themselves €22m over three years for the sale of Yoann Gourcuff to Olympique Lyonnais, they look set to put the money to good use already by strengthening the area of the field they need it the most - the attacking line. With Chamakh already gone and Cavenaghi looking like he could leave for the Premier League, Bordeaux are thin on options up front.

Moussa Maazou already has experience of playing in Ligue 1 following his loan spell to Monaco for the second part of last season which was a successful one, scoring 8 goals in 22 league appearances. I think that for the price, this would be a very astute option for Bordeaux to look into as he may be able to be even more successful with the service the likes of Wendel and Gouffran can provide on their day.

Toulouse have taken Olympique Lyonnais youngster Yanis Tafer on loan as a replacement for André-Pierre Gignac. Toulouse also have the option to buy the young striker outright should his loan move be successful for a fee of €4m.

I thought he had a decent pre-season and has a bright future ahead of him. Unfortunately for Lyon, I can see Toulouse taking the option to buy seeing as it is relatively low for a player with the potential Tafer possesses. He is untested over a long period of time in Ligue 1, despite making some cameo appearances in games at times over the past couple of years. He has one league goal to his name, but Toulouse will be looking to give him first-team action in order to fill the void in the depth of attacking players left by the departure of André-Pierre Gignac following his transfer to Olympique de Marseille.

Potentially a big weekend in Ligue 1, especially with the mammoth fixture of Bordeaux -vs- Marseille taking place this weekend. Lyon have the opportunity to get themselves another 3 points on the board but will need to show the togetherness they showed in pre-season as they haven't set the place alight with their usually-fine attacking displays so far this season. Newly-promoted sides Arles and Brest will be looking to get some points on the board to put themselves in a decent enough position to escape their predicted relegation whereas Caen will be hoping their loss at the weekend was just a blip, as they have started the season surprisingly well.

Quote

PARIS (AFP) – Rennes midfielder Fabien Lemoine is facing six months on the sidelines following a heavy blow to the side at the weekend that split one of his kidneys.

The injury, sustained in a collision with an opposing player during the Breton side's 3-0 win at Nancy on Saturday, saw Lemoine's kidney split into three parts and there were intial fears for his long-term health.

"This kind of injury in football is very rare and is more common in car crashes," said Rennes club doctor Karl Chaory.

He added that there were two possibilities for the treatment of the injury.

"The first is that we can hope that the kidney heals by itself, but that would take time -- at least six months, almost certainly longer," he said.

"The second would involve an operation to remove the kidney. That would take less time, but of course we would give priority to the player's overall health rather than to sporting considerations."

A final decision on how to proceed will be taken in the next 10 days, with Lemoine expected to be relased from hospital in Nancy at the end of this week.

Quote

Lyon boss Claude Puel has admitted he is worried by the length of time it is taking Lisandro Lopez to recover from an Achilles injury.

The Argentine striker, who joined Lyonhttp://static.lingospot.com/
spot/image/spacer.gif from Porto 12 months ago, has been out of action since picking up the injury in pre-season at the start of July.

He was not initially expected to be sidelined for too long but the road back to fitness has been slow and Puelhttp://static.lingospot.com/
spot/image/spacer.gif is not sure when the 27-year-old will be ready to play.

"It's pretty much up to him to decide when he returns," said Puel.

"In the MRI scan, there's a little mark on the sheath of his tendon. It depends on how the player feels.

"It worries me a little bit because I was expecting him to be able to return more quickly and at the start, it wasn't a serious injury."

Had enough
Lyon have picked up just one point from their opening two Ligue 1 games of the season and Puel is keen to have Lisandro available again as quickly as possible.

"He's spent a month and a half doing nothing, to which you have to add a month and a half of holidays during which he didn't do anything either," explained the manager.

"That makes a total of three months. He wants to get back. He's had enough.

"A player who isn't on the pitch always finds it hard. He's not good at the moment."

It is worrying as he was expected to be fit for the opening game, which he wasn't. He was then expected to be fit for the second game, which he wasn't. Now he isn't fit enough for this weekend either! The problem still seems to be the achilles rather than his general fitness but it is obviously still worrying for Claude Puel as Lyon need their big players to perform. Lyon have an advantage over the two other big clubs in France as they have a point to their name at the moment, however Lyon have missed Lisandro's general pace, vision and finishing up front. Briand and Gomis have a fair amount of pace themselves but Lisandro has certainly been missed so far this season.

Pape Diakhaté loaned to Lyon

Dynamo Kyiv defender Pape Diakhaté is attracting interest from Olympique Lyonnais according to Le Parisien. Arsenal had been linked with the versatile defender earlier in the window but nothing came of the interest.

Diakhaté was loaned to Saint Étienne in the second half of last season in order to provide some defensive stability to the side. Their defensive record had been very poor over the season as a whole, but Diakhaté was definitely one of the better performers. He has experience in Ligue 1 following a successful spell at the start of his career at Nancy. Pape Diakhaté is also part of the Senegal international side and has the ability to play in several defensive roles.

Lyon are in desperate need for defensive reinforcements following the departure of Jean-Alain Boumsong to Panathinaikos. Overall, they were found out too many times last season and now lack the numbers and strength in depth to alleiviate fan concerns. Jérémy Toulalan has been shifted into defence but Cris picked up an injury in the game against Caen at the weekend and could be out for around three weeks. Interest in Lille's Adil Rami failed to come to fruition after the clubs were unable to agree a fee.

The article above includes a quote by Diakhaté saying he is "of course interested" in the move to OL. It also suggests the fee could be around €4m.

With the big sides suffering early-on in this Ligue 1 campaign, the smaller sides are seizing the opportunity in order to get some early points on the board. Caen have started well by defeating both Marseille and Lyon and will be looking to continue this good run of form going into the next game against last season's surprise-side Montpellier. Marseille will play Lorient and will look to get their first points on the board. Lyon have just one point to their name after two games, but will be looking to change that when they face newly-promoted Brest.
This should be a good game between these two sides. Paris Saint-Germain will be looking to overcome two seasons of relative anonymity in Ligue 1 with manager Antoine Kombouaré making some astute signings in the off-season so far. Bordeaux, on the other hand, were unimpressive last season and look like they could continue in the same vein. Two games in and no points has left chairman Jean-Louis Triaud fuming, but a lack of any real investment in the squad could be to blame. These two sides will be desperate for a win on Sunday!

Bordeaux Chairman In Rage

Bordeaux chairman Jean-Louis Triaud is fuming at Bordeaux's start to the Ligue 1 season. Just two games in, Bordeaux have yet to score any points or put in performances to make fans optimistic about their chances this season. The club lost influential striker Marouane Chamakh in the off season, came close to losing Alou Diarra and could still lose Yoann Gourcuff. Triaud is not happy at the nature of the performances being put in by the Bordeaux players and wants a change fast.

In their first two games, Bordeaux have lacked any real inspiration from their side. They need Gourcuff to be like he was two seasons ago for them - a star player who they can rely on to pull them out of the dirt when they're down. Gourcuff has been relatively absent in the first two games of the campaign so far following a sub-standard season last campaign. If things do not continue, it could be a season much like last year's - no competitive edge and no European football as a result. What does work in Bordeaux's favour is that they will not have European football this term but they don't seem to be using it to their advantage at the moment. They, much like their title rivals Olympique de Marseille and Olympique Lyonnais, will be hoping that this is just a start-of-season blip and that they will be back to normal very soon.

Following a good start to the Ligue 1 season this term, Toulouse have been struck by two injuries. Striker Xavier Pentecote looks set to be out of action for 6 months after he suffered anterior ligament damage in his right knee in the 2-1 victory over Bordeaux on Sunday. The 24 year-old had tests which confirmed the worst for Toulouse. Moussa Sissoko will also be out, though only for three weeks. The midfielder, who started for France last week against Norway, was also injured in the Bordeaux game and will likely be unavailable for selection by Laurent Blanc when the next France squad is due to be selected as the qualifiers start.

Not the best news for some Ligue 1 players. Bear in mind that Olympique Lyonnais midfielder Éderson was told that he will be out for at least 4 months after picking up an injury similar to Pentecote's when on International duty for Brazil last week.

Lille Winger gets New Contract

Quote

Lille
have announced via their official website that they have secured the short-term future of Poland wideman Ludovic Obraniak, who has signed a one-year extension with the club, taking him through to 2012 with les Dogues.

Obraniak had been widely expected to depart the Stade Lille-Metropole this summer as he was being offered only a limited run in the first team. Auxerre were heavily linked to the former Metz midfielder, but he has ultimately committed himself to les Dogues for the time being.

The 25-year-old has provided able back-up in the Lille side, scoring 15 times and providing 14 assists from his station on the left wing since joining from les Grenats in the winter transfer window of 2007.

Despite being born in France, Obraniak elected to represent Poland at international level and made a great impression on his debut, when he struck a brace against Greece – still his only international goals to date in eight caps.

He will provide welcome assistance for LOSC as they attempt to better last season’s fourth-placed Ligue 1 finish, doubtless aware that he could get his chance on a more regular basis if Eden Hazard should move on next summer, as is widely expected.

This should ward off the interest from Auxerre, who had made their policy in signing a left-winger 'Obraniak-or-bust!'. Auxerre were offered PSG's winger Jerome Rothen but nothing has been reported on this for a while.

Obraniak has done well in his role as a back-up player at Lille and should continue to do so in the coming season with this new deal. Lille have a good young squad available to them and this should continue to bode them well in Ligue 1 in the coming season.

This is bad news for the player, especially after starting the opener against Monaco last week. The two clubs had been negotiating for the majority of this summer window and it now seems that Bordeaux are on the verge of getting their man. The youngster looks set to add some depth to the Bordeaux attack following the loss of Marouane Chamakh to Arsenal earlier in the summer. After spending last season on loan at Angers in Ligue 2 and scoring 19 league goals for them, it remains to be seen whether he'll go straight into the starting line-up.
