Kaiser fears for Adler

Quote

Germany legend Franz Beckenbauer has accused the country's first-choice goalkeeper Rene Adler of making "one error after the other" following an unconvincing performance against Hamburg at the weekend.

GettyImagesRene Adler is an important player for Joachim Low's side• World Cup Legend: Beckenbauer

Adler, 25, currently has ownership of the No. 1 shirt ahead of the World Cup finals in South Africa but generated cause for concern when racing off his line against Hamburg and colliding with defender Sami Hyypia, allowing Ze Roberto to score in a 4-2 win for Bayer Leverkusen.

Adler said he had "looked a bit stupid" following the mistake and Beckenbauer, who captained West Germany to World Cup glory in 1974 and then repeated the feat as coach in 1990, was forthright in his criticism of the international 'keeper.

"If somebody makes an error like that in a school team, then you would tell him to find a different sport," Beckenbauer said on Sky. "Adler is a great goalkeeper, but since he has known that he is the No. 1, he is making one error after the other."

However, Leverkusen director of sport Rudi Voller, who played under Beckenbauer when West Germany won the 1990 World Cup in Italy, has supported Adler's claims to keep goal for his country in South Africa.

"He is just the goalkeeper that Germany needs," Voller said. "Rene at least takes risks and that is why he is rightly Germany's No. 1. I hate nothing more than goalkeepers who just stand on their line and play for the galleries."

Adler is hoping to quickly eradicate mistakes from his game, saying: "We have such a great team who can iron out individual errors and I hope the days soon return when I can give something back to the team."

Germany aren't exactly blessed with any World class keepers these days - although I know there are pushes in some parts for Bremen's Wiese to get the number one spot - am sure Nudge may agree.

Aside from the two above, only Manuel Neuer offers serious competition, but he's still quite young and lacks experience.

Wonder though.....if the Kaisers Bayern bias is shining through here?

Quote

Forever young: Nigerian football's age-old problem
Nwankwo Kanu is 42 and Taribo West, whose career ended two years ago, is in his late fifties, say bloggers in Nigeria

Nwankwo Kanu's official age is 33 but his real age is 42. Obafemi Martins is not 25 but 32. Jay-Jay Okocha was 10 years older than his "official" age throughout his career. And Taribo West, whose playing career ended only two years ago, is in his late fifties. Who says so? A stream of bloggers on some of Nigeria's most popular websites, in response to comments made after the country's timid effort in last month's Africa Cup of Nations.

Failure to win that trophy is nearly always considered a scandal in the continent's most populous nation but Nigeria's latest misadventure in the tournament triggered a particularly explosive condemnation back home.

It started when a former manager of a leading Nigerian club told the Lagos Guardian: "What happened in Angola is a confirmation of what has been happening in the past where most of our players falsified their age during competition. Most of the players are beyond the age they professed and this made it impossible for them to withstand the pace of teams like Zambia and Benin."

It also led to an entertaining discussion that shows no sign of abating as the Nigerians, who have three months to prepare for the World Cup, reacted to the criticism by sacking the coach. "Our boys are old, we are paying the price for age cheating," said Ken Anugweje, a former national team doctor and board member of the Nigerian Football Federation.

Suspicions about true ages of some Nigerian footballers date back 20 years. Fifa banned Nigeria from all international fixtures for two years after finding that the birth dates of three of their players in the 1988 Olympics were different from ones used by the same players in previous tournaments.

A year later Pelé famously declared "an African team will definitely win the World Cup by the turn of the century" after watching seemingly promising Nigerian youngsters lift the Under-17 World Cup and reach the final of the Under-20 competition. How was Pelé to know that the so-called Under-20s of 1989 were so old that, in the words of George Onmonya on nigeriavillagesquare.com, "most of our players have now retired and become grandpas"?

Nigeria have a rich tradition of seemingly promising youngsters who mysteriously fail to fulfil their potential. Phillip Osondu was the best player at the 1987 Under-17 World Cup, after which he was snapped up by Anderlecht, only to drift out of the game and into janitorial work after questions were raised about his real age.

The star of Nigeria's finalists at the 2001 Under-17 competition went on to become officially the third-youngest player to appear in the senior World Cup when he started the 0-0 draw with England in 2002. But that was as good as it got for Femi Opabunmi, who by 2005 was playing part-time football in the French lower leagues.

A trawl through the blogosphere makes for intriguing reading. "A friend of mine who once played in the Nigerian league told me his real age was 34 but his football age was 21," wrote Onmonya. "You can walk into any immigration office in Nigeria today, forge documents at the nearby business centre, change your name, place of birth, date of birth, pay 7,000-10,000 naira instead of the official price of about 5,500 for an international passport and within hours you have completed the whole process." A new passport, a new person – and if you are a footballer, a younger one.

A former employee of the British embassy in Nigeria told Observer Sport that when visa applicants complained to him about having their applications rejected, he would reply: "Well don't talk to me about it, I'm dead." He would respond to their looks of puzzlement by pointing to the wall behind him, on which hung his death certificate, purchased for a small fee from a Lagos supplier. Fifa reckon they have finally come up with a foolproof way of determining real age. Ahead of last year's Under-17 World Cup in, as it happened, Nigeria, the governing body announced that players would be subjected to wrist scans using magnetic resonance imaging, and this would determine their true age.

That led some countries to undertake precautionary scans beforehand. The results were never announced, but Nigeria suddenly discarded 15 squad members, while Gambia omitted 11 of the 18 who had helped them to victory in the African Under-17 championship a few months earlier. Reports claim that retrospective analyses of the previous three Under-17 World Cups showed more than a third of all players were too old.

Source

According to that.. Kanu is 42, Martins is 32.. and Okocha was/is actually 10 years older.

A lot of reasons have been attributed to the fall from grace of the france national team. The most common ones being,

The retirement of Zidane and their inability to replace him with a player of similar calibre.

The shaky defense and the lack of a lynchpin.

An aging Henry and the lack of a consistent young striker

Raymond Domenech the tactless coach

On the bright side they have in Lloris someone way better than Barthez ever was

What other flaws do you notice in the present team?

Is there a short term solution for France to save face in the WC?

Who should be the back 4?

Who should be the striker/s ?

What should be the Les blues long term plan ?

Edwin Van Der Sar rules out Holland return

Quote

Holland coach Bert van Marwijk will have to make do without the services of experienced Manchester United goalkeeper Edwin van der Sar during this summer's World Cup.

The former Juventus and Ajax shot-stopper retired from international football after Euro 2008, but recent speculation suggested that van der Sar could decide to come out of his retirement for the 2010 World Cup.

"I will not go the World Cup with Oranje. I made this decision after the World Cup qualifier against Norway and I will not change my mind," said van der Sar to Algemeen Dagblad.

"That's all I want to say about this subject. It's now up to goalkeepers such as Maarten Stekelenburg to prove that they're worthy of their spot as Holland goalie."

Van Marwijk will probably opt to take Stekelenburg to South Africa as first choice keeper, while Utrecht shot stopper Michel Vorm is likely to be named as his deputy.

Source

Bad news for Holland, though it's probably expected. They'll have to deal with Stekelenburg now, and while he's a decent keeper, he's nowhere near the level of van der Sar, in my opinion. On the other hand, it gives a chance for other, younger keepers to gain international experience and prove themselves. Holland's defensive line also doesn't look that reliable for me (although worked well in the qualification and friendlies), I think they might have quite a few problems in the back during the World Cup.

2018 - Personally, I'd go for England. I wan't to see the home nation of football hosting the World Cup at least once throughout my life-time. It would be epic if England host the World Cup a second time. In my opinion, it's good for football and for the development of the game world-wide.

2022 - I wan't this to go to either Qatar or Australia. I prefer Qatar, of course, since it would be the first Middle Eastern host. Also, I like Qatar and why not? Sure, there are many things to tackle but it would be nice if they host it. If Qatar's bid fails, I hope Australia gets it. My only concern with Australia is that they're facing so many challenges from other football codes right now. Rugby Union, Rugby League and Aussie Rules football codes are all trying their best to prevent a FIFA World Cup being played at Australia, due to 'timing' issues. Pathetic, really, 'cause it would also be nice seeing Australia hosting the World Cup.

So my 2 main picks are:
England (2018) and Qatar (2022), with Australia as an alternative to Qatar. I have no alternative to England, they MUST host the 2018 WC. They just have to!

Guus Hiddink named the new Turkey coach

The Turkish Football Federation has confirmed that Guus Hiddink has been appointed as the new head coach of Turkey's national side. The Dutch gaffer has signed a two-year deal with an option for two additional years.

Hiddink recently revealed that he wouldn't extend his expiring contract with the Russian FA and had since been continually linked with nations such as Nigeria, Ivory Coast and North Korea.

However, the successful coach has now decided to commit his future to Turkey. Hiddink's contract will start on August 1, 2010.

His first task will be to guide the Turks to Euro 2012. Turkey were paired with Germany, Belgium, Austria, Azerbaijan and Kazakhstan for the qualifying campaign.

The 63-year-old Hiddink has been successful as the national team coach of Netherlands, South Korea, Australia and Russia in the past.

I admit, i 'dislike' international football, and think watching England isn't very good, and i can't say i LOVE England. However, i cannot wait for this WC! I was 13 at the last one, and can't even remember it very much, but now once this one comes, i'll be 17, and can enjoy it more by going out and getting served in the local area and get a feeling of the atmosphere.
May be the same old shit for some of you lot, but i see this as my first 'proper' WC where i can get a feel for the atmosphere as i'm at a decent age for it.

So, any of you lot really looking forward to it? For what reasons?

It might seem a little knee-jerk but I can well see him going to the world cup in June. He's been consistently excellent for the u21s and in my view has been their best player. More so than Milner who is suddenly all the rage and who has now (surprisingly for some) stepped up into the senior squad. I've always been a little put off Johnson because he looks a bit "spazzy" and not quite quick enough. But he seems to have quickened up a bit of late, and has always played with a certain confidence and drive. Downing who has been getting good reviews for reasons unknown to me is just one who could be ejected to make way.
Sunday 7th February 11.00 GMT (Radio fivelive & www.bbc.co.uk)

Seeding pots

Pot one: Spain (holders), Germany, Netherlands, Italy, England, Croatia, Portugal, France, Russia

Pot two: Greece, Czech Republic, Sweden, Switzerland, Serbia, Turkey, Denmark, Slovakia, Romania

Pot three: Israel, Bulgaria, Finland, Norway, Republic of Ireland, Scotland, Northern Ireland, Austria, Bosnia-Herzegovina

Pot four: Slovenia, Latvia, Hungary, Lithuania, Belarus, Belgium, Wales, FYR Macedonia, Cyprus

Pot five: Montenegro, Albania, Estonia, Georgia, Moldova, Iceland, Armenia, Kazakhstan, Liechtenstein

Pot six: Azerbaijan, Luxembourg, Malta, Faroe Islands, Andorra, San Marino

England could face Wales and Northern Ireland like they did in the 2006 World Cup qualifiers. Pot four has one or two dangerous sides, Slovenia beat Russia in the play-off to reach the World Cup, Hungary were only three points behind Portugal in their group and surely Belgium can't keep being ordinary having been to finals as recently as 2002. I'm somewhat surprised Austria are in pot three, they only reached the Euros in 2008 as co-hosts where they didn't progress, the last time they qualified was 1998 and despite shocking France early in 2010 qualifiers they finished seven points behind France.

Might be some justification to those will start bleating "fixed" at England being top seeds, they didn't qualify in 2008 and surely that should carry some weight, NINE teams qualified for 2004 AND 2008 so surely they should be pot one seeds?

Spain : qualified every time since failing to qualify in 1992, reigning champions and twice quarter-finalists in those four consecutive appearances
Germany : qualified every time since their first (winning) appearance in 1972, three times winners and three times runners-up
Holland : Won it in 1988 having missed out in 1984 and have got to the QFs or beyond every time since (three SFs, two QFs)
Italy : Disappointing in 1996 and 2004, not getting past round one, but runners-up in 2000 and a QF last time around
Croatia : QF last time around, groups in 2004 and a QF in their first appearance in 1996
Portugal : pretty consistent : QF, SF, Runners-Up and QF in the past four competitions.
France : qualified every time since and including 1992, won it in 2000 but didn't get past the groups in 2008
Russia : SF last time out, didn't get past the groups in 2004 in a group which included the winners and runners-up

Sweden : reached the QFs in 2004, but didn't get out of the groups in 2008
Greece : surprise winners in 2004, didn't get out of the groups in 2008
Switzerland : may have bombed out in the groups each time, but reached the finals in 2008 (co-hosts), 2004 and 1996
England : didn't qualify in 2008, lost in the QF to Portugal in 2004 and didn't get past the groups in 2000

Of the top seeds, Russia, Germany, Spain, Holland, Italy and France have all won it. Only Croatia and England are top seeds who haven't won the European Championship, or reached the final, although Yugoslavia did finish runners-up twice (before they split up into Croatia, Bosnia, Serbia, Slovenia etc) I'd say Greece have more right to be top seeds having won it in the past two competitions ahead of England who didn't even qualify last time so winner and R1 is better than QF and DNQ

I'd settle for any of pot two bar Serbia, Sweden or Czech Rep. Pot three I'd maybe avoid horrible away days like Israel and wouldn't mind steering clear of Belgium in pot four. I'd quite like a five team group as well, reduce fixtures and pot six has very little "shock factor" that might work in England's favour if it were a six team group and England struggled

What would your England World Cup squad be at present?

So we're well into the new year now, 4 months to go until the World Cup kicks off in South Africa.....players are really starting to stake a claim for squad cases.

Who in your own opinions, should be on the plane to SA this summer, going on how things stand now?
Any surprises?

My current squad would be as follows:

Rob Green
Joe Hart
Paul Robinson

John Terry
Rio Ferdinand
Joleon Lescott
Ashley Cole
Glen Johnson
Leighton Baines
Gary Cahill

Steven Gerrard
Frank Lampard
Gareth Barry
David Beckham
Aaron Lennon
Tom Huddlestone
David Bentley
James Milner

Wayne Rooney
Jermain Defoe
Gabby Agbonlahor
Darren Bent
Theo Walcott

The only changes I may make to this realistically would be maybe swap Bent for Heskey, as the latter allows the use of different systems!

I could see Rooney playing up front with Agbonlahor, Defoe or Walcott quite easily, as all three have more pace than Rooney......and everyone knows Rooney likes to link up and attack from deep, which could work well with a pacey forward ahead of him.....and on current form it would have to be Defoe for me!

Mexico announce list of friendly games before the World Cup

2-24-Bolivia – San Francisco
3-3 – New Zealand -- Pasadena
3-17 TBD -- Mexico
3-24 Iceland -- Charlotte
5-7 Ecuador – Meadowlands
5-10 Senegal – Chicago
5-13 TBD – Houston (most likely the USCrap)
5-16 Chile - Estadio Azteca
5-24 England – Wembley
5-26 Holland – TBD
5-30 Portugal (yet to be confirmed) – TBD
6-3 Italy -- Belgium

Even if the USA game is schedule, the true challenges don't start until we play Chile. It's going to be a win mainly because we are going to be playing home and I doubt that both teams will use their starting 11 throughout the whole game. This schedule is basically divided into two sections. The actual warm-up and the money-getting games. The warm-up games will be against Chile at home and all of the games in Europe. Ecuador is the only decent team in the top-half and we should be playing stronger teams but it means more money for Mexico and I don't mind seeing us anal rape teams like Bolivia and USA (5-1 bitches!!!!, last home game for the USA against Mexico). The only game of importance in the top half is going to be against Senegal and that's because we have the host team in our group and it will give us a chance to play against an african team. Senegal is much better than SA in my opinion, with more known players and SA has made it official that they will not call players in Europe that are not playing and they would rather use local players. The only negative thing I see about the schedule is short amount of days among the games. We inaugurate the new Giants stadium (did the same with Cowboys') and three days later we play the USA (most likely) and than fly to Mexico and play Chile in three days. Play England, two days later Holland, four days later Portugal, and 3 or 4 days later (too lazy to look up if that month has 30 or 31 days) we play the World Champions.

To be honest, I really see us winning eight games, draw three, and lose one.

Boliva 4-1
NZ 2-0
3-17 slot don't know the team but its most likely another crap team. 3-1
Iceland 3-1
Ecuador 2-1
Senegal 2-2
UScrap 5-1 part two n.n*
Chile 2-1
England 2-1
Holland 1-1
Portugal 1-2 (Our GK is great but CR is too damn good) n.n*
Italy 2-1 (mass debates, we will have this bitches begging again not to score) n.n*

I really believe that we can beat England at Wembley. Their lack of a good GK and the fact that the combination of a defender who believes he does not have to defend and a defensive midfielder that cannot go down and help the Defence (barry) will be the deciding factor. We might not have the best team but we play well together and *hate to say this* but the victory of USA over Spain is a clear example of what Mexico can do, but more. n.n*

Blatter hints at opening on video replays

Quote

GENEVA (AFP) - World football chief Sepp Blatter said in a newspaper interview on Sunday that he might consider video assistance for referees in the future.

The president of world football's governing body FIFA has staunchly opposed the use of video replays as a refereeing aid because they would interrupt the flow of the game.

But he told the Swiss newspaper Sonntagsblick that he might consider them after other technology has been approved.

"I'm not completely against it. But only when goal line technology is ready to be introduced, only then," he said.

The guardian of football's rules, the International Football Association Board, is due to discuss electronic goal line technology, including computer chips in balls and goalmouth cameras, at its meeting in March.

Blatter again ruled out the introduction of such aids in South Africa this summer.

"We won't carry out any experiments there, not even with two extra referees," he added.

Two additional assistant referees are being lined up in Europa League matches this season in a trial aimed at improving surveillance of incidents in penalty box.

In December, FIFA's executive committee also ruled out the introduction of video technology to assist referees similar to the system used in rugby, cricket and tennis.

Pressure for refereeing aids surged again with the furore that followed Thierry Henry's blatant handball in a World Cup playoff against Ireland in November that saw France qualify for the finals.

Quote

(GSM) - Sevilla striker Frederic Kanoute has decided to call it a day on his international career. Following Mali's exit from the African Nations Cup, Kanoute announced his international retirement.

Kanoute scored 23 goals in 38 appearances since his Mali debut in 2004. He confirmed his decision was final after Mali beat Malawi 3-1. However, Mali's victory was meaningless as the Eagles crashed out of the competition.

"That's life," he told the Angolan Angop news agency. "I'm sorry I couldn't succeed in helping my team go further at the Nations Cup, which now marks my retirement."

Kanoute continued, "I can't find the words to describe how upset I am, it really hurts me. After we were knocked out in 2008 we really wanted to do well here.

"For my last appearance in this competition I wanted to go as far as possible. We will now take stock of our team," the 2007 African Footballer of the Year added.

it's a shame that such a decent striker could not make a bigger impact on the International stage with his country. he's done (non-)surpisingly well with them and it sucks that in his career he's only had 38 international appearances. great striker.

World Cup fans can buy personalised stab vests!

Quote

FOOTBALL fans planning on going to the World Cup in South Africa are being offered stab vests in their team's colours.
The vests are being sold online by London-registered firm Protektorvest.com and can display any flag of a fan's choosing.

The British Football Supporters Federation (BSSF) said the company is cashing in on fears of the country's crime rate, Sky News reports.

The BSSF said wearing a stab vest at what should be a carnival of soccer was in bad taste and "smacked of panic" over South Africa's notoriously high crime rate.

BSSF spokesman Malcolm Clarke said Thursday the federation worked closely with the authorities and the British Football Association to give fans security advice.

"Part of that advice will not include buying a stab vest. This will just panic people and introduce a degree of tension," he said.

Protektorvest. Owner Sascha Cutura said he was disappointed people thought they were trying to induce fear in fans going to South Africa.

"We are both football fans ourselves. We certainly don't want to offend South Africa but the risk is there," he added.

The company claims the $122 vests will protect fans from stabs, cuts, slashes and blows from sharp-edged or spiked weapons.

Who Would You Play Up Front For England?

Rooney has to be a definite starter. In my opinion we need a big man up top. Therefore i would start Carlton Cole up top with Rooney. For me i think Carlton Cole offers a bit more than Heskey does.

Your top 5 internationals of 2009

5. Brazil 3-2 United States
2009 Confederations Cup

Was nice to see the Americans in an tournament final. They took an improbable 2-0 lead by half time against the likes of Brazil, but the Brazilians scored three goals in the second half, including a late winner by Lucio. The 2009 tournament had a few other great games, including the Americans' upset of Spain, and Egypt defeating Italy, but they didn't make this list for me.

4. Slovenia 1-0 Russia
2010 World Cup qualifying

One of the bigger upsets of the year in Europe. Russia's lapse in concentration late in their home leg ultimately cost them as an impressive Slovenian side won 1-0 in front of their own fans (though if not for the meaning of the game, it was a bit lacking in action).

3. England 5-1 Croatia
2010 World Cup qualifying

The recent clashes between England and Croatia in qualifying have been very painful for me, as it's my father's country (England) against my grandmother's country (Croatia). After winning all seven of their previous qualifiers, England could ensure a ticket to 2010 with a win at home against Croatia. They did it in style, completely dismantling the Croatians at Wembley, though I had to look on with mixed feelings as the loss were a harsh blow to Croatia's European play-off hopes.

2. Singapore 2-1 Jordan
2011 Asian Cup qualifying

Historically, Singapore have made things very difficult for themselves in Asian Cup qualifying, and after getting destroyed by Iran 6-0 in the first match with a very terrible performance it looked like it was going to be no different. Jordan were more to our level but not an easy opponent, and we managed a very hard-fought win against them to trigger one of our best qualification campaigns in recent times.

1. Saudi Arabia 2-2 Bahrain
2010 World Cup qualifying

What can I say about this match? The best ending to a football match I've ever seen. Better than any of Turkey's Euro 2008 matches, better than the 1999 Champions League final. Bahrain's home leg finished 0-0, and this one was 1-1 going into added time. Saudi Arabia score in the 91st minute in to send the stadium into a frenzy, but Bahrain, a tiny country on an island in the Persian Gulf with a population of under one million, equalised in the 94th minute to win on away goals, and represent the AFC in the intercontinental playoff against New Zealand.
